HVAC Training Tip of the Week: Skin Irritation

After a long day in an attic or any space containing insulation, you may end up acquiring a serious itch due to fiberglass or other substances. What may seem like a small inconvenience can become a nerve-wrecking experience, with every second driving you more up the wall as you try your best to not think about scratching.

Here are some common tips to help alleviate the itch and get you on with your day:

Showers -When the job is all said and done, taking a shower can go a long way to helping to alleviate any irritated skin. The trick is to take a short cold shower followed by a short hot shower. The cold shower keeps the fiberglass from going any deeper in the skin, while the hot shower opens the pores up and releases the fibers.

Attire -In order to keep yourself from getting irritated skin in the first place, you should try wearing long-sleeved shirts and pants when working in insulated areas. Furthermore you should think about wearing goggles and a mask to prevent you from inhaling anything dangerous or irritating your eyes.

Tape and Lint Rolls – Another way to remove fiberglass is through the use of adhesive bound products. This can include using a lint roll or some duct tape. With duct tape, make sure to press gently on the skin, as you could end up pushing the fiberglass deeper into your skin.

Vinegar – Vinegar has been used as a natural remedy to many common problems, from indigestion to irritated skin. If you’ve removed the fiberglass but still have some irritation, dabble a little bit of vinegar on the area.

Use these tips whenever you come back from a job and you’ll be feeling itch-free in no time.
