Top Skills HVAC Technicians Need to Get the Job Done

Before you enroll in an HVAC training program, it helps to know what you’re getting into. It takes a certain personality to become a successful HVAC technician. The best HVAC technicians share these three traits.

Amazing People Skills

Even if you’re a math whiz and mechanical genius, you’ll need people skills to make it in this business. One of the greatest challenges technicians face is the ability to convince the customer to fix the problem. Sounds easy enough right? Wrong! Just tell someone they need a new furnace and you’ll understand. Even the sweetest customer can turn irate when faced with an expensive repair. Honest and friendly technicians are more likely to retain customers and get glowing recommendations around town. If you’re patient and can make friends with anyone, an HVAC career is right for you.

Flexibility

Not to scare you, but HVAC technicians work much more than nine to five. Climate control systems don’t wait until you’re at work to break down. Technicians are on call day and night. This doesn’t mean that you’ll never get a vacation but you do need to be flexible. As an HVAC technician, you’ll have to drop your social commitments with little notice. That day relaxing on the beach could quickly turn into a day repairing an air conditioner. But if you thrive on impromptu phone calls and a flexible schedule, you’re the perfect person for the job.

Quick Problem Solver

The best HVAC technicians have the ability to solve problems quickly. If you have a natural knack for knowing how things work and how to fix them, you’ll likely be a good HVAC technician. Keep in mind that technicians must work quickly and in stressful situations (like when a customer is watching your every move). HVAC technicians who work the fastest, while still doing a great job will have an advantage over others in the industry.

Some of these skills take practice and some are just part of our personalities. Now that you know what skills you’ll need, it might be time to enroll in a HVAC training program.
