The Skills Every HVAC Technician Must Have
HVAC technicians have interesting and fast paced work assignments. Even if you are just performing some routine maintenance or scheduled testing of equipment you will be kept busy and must work quickly. Simply having a knack with tools or machinery repair is not enough to obtain certification and employment.
Anyone who wants to work in the HVAC industry must be willing to devote the time and effort that is needed to master a number of different tasks. You will need to be able to get along well with others and interact with customers in a friendly, professional manner. The training and education involved will prepare you to troubleshoot, diagnose and repair many different heating and air conditioning problems.
Technicians that get their HVAC certification will be able to install and repair AC units, heaters, radiators, boilers or furnaces by themselves or as members of a team. They will be familiar with the different types of compounds and gases used to recharge refrigeration and cooling equipment. These highly skilled techs will also understand the tubing and ventilation systems that circulate air in buildings.
If you hope to work with heating and air conditioning companies you must be reasonably strong and physically fit. Sometimes you will be scaling ladders in order to check roof top equipment, or you might have to climb under homes to trace a problem with an air delivery system. Many of the parts needed for climate control are very heavy and it is very important that you be able to lift and move the items required.
When you are a full fledged HVAC tech you are generally given the opportunity to specialize in the area that has the most appeal to you. Some people like the installation field but there are many individuals that are happiest performing regular and routine maintenance. Additional opportunities exist for techs to specialize in sales and service. You will always be encouraged to test the waters and learn as much as possible about the HVAC area that holds your interest. Cross training in several fields will make you a much more valuable employee and will also give you the foundation needed to one day begin your own company.
