The Future of HVAC Careers

The U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics says HVAC employment opportunities will rise at the same rate of the population over the next 10 years. As our country grows in real estate, infrastructure and people, so does the need for climate control.

Another factor contributing to the rise in HVAC jobs is its specialized field. A career in HVAC requires many years of HVAC training due to the complexity of heating and venting systems. As these systems grow in complexity and size, we can expect the potential for system malfunctions, which inherently increases the need for HVAC service technicians.

Other factors contributing to the rise in demand for HVAC training and technicians:

  • Government regulations on enhancing indoor/outdoor air quality
  • Widespread use of refrigeration equipment throughout small and large businesses
  • Increasing government regulations on more efficient energy management – leading to the replacement of obsolete venting and cooling systems
  • Greater emphasis on environmental standards and regulations – leading to the research and development of affordable, energy-saving heating and air conditioning units
  • Enhanced training regarding the proper disposal and elimination of cooling units that relied on polluting CFC’s

Increasing HVAC job opportunities are available across the United States, in the fastest growing areas of the country and in the areas with the greatest need for climate control. HVAC technicians focusing in service and repair can expect the most stable work throughout the year, but those who focus on insulation work will find the largest payout combined with intermittent work fluctuations due to local construction levels.
