Is HVAC Training Worth the Money?
HVAC is a career with a future and there is a constant demand for workers who are well trained and also have experience and certification. This skilled trade provides people the chance to work with all types and sizes of cooling and heating equipment for businesses and homes. These workers are the backbone of an industry that repairs, installs, maintains and replaces the climate control systems that society depends upon. In addition to heating and air conditioning equipment HVAC techs are also trained in refrigeration repairs. Many times the acronym is lengthened to HVACR so that it reflects this specialized area of study.
Workers in the HVAC industry have to train for long periods of time because their field covers many different types of equipment. They will have to become familiar with thermostats, ventilation ducts, electric motors, schematic diagrams, pipes, fans and even solar panels. The work and the study can be extremely challenging but it is always interesting and fast paced.
Troubleshooting is one of the basic strengths needed if you want to work in the heating and air conditioning field. HVAC technicians must be prepared to identify and diagnose problems in a number of different heating or air conditioning system. They are expected to isolate where the trouble is and then set about making the appropriate repairs. After the repair work is completed they have to run checks to make sure that everything is now functioning normally. In addition to troubleshooting and repairs HVAC workers are frequently called upon to replace or modernize outdated climate control systems.
Most workers are cross trained in all of these areas, but then they ease into the type of work that they are most suited for. Some will choose to be installers and others may prefer to concentrate on maintaining and repairing HVAC systems. With the interest in clean energy heating up there are even opportunities to specialize in solar heating and air conditioning.
A technician can now expect to earn hourly rates averaging $20+ an hour when they are just starting out and this pay will quickly increase. There are some jobs that may pay a little under this hourly figure, but the top jobs for experienced workers can easily top $40. This high pay makes the long hours of study and the intense training classes all worth it.
