So you want to be an HVAC technician? For such a technically demanding job, the day-to-day tasks required are often unclear. This can be a problem for applicants interested in breaking into the industry.
Before you begin the process of seeking out the proper avenues for training, it is good to have a general idea what an HVAC technician does on a daily basis. This article will outline the tasks required for those intent on beginning a career as an HVAC technician.
HVAC technicians’ primary job is to install, maintain and repair the heating, ventilation and A/C equipment of their client’s residential or commercial buildings. Your job will entail the operation and maintenance of these machines. With the onset of digital equipment, your job will also require you to repair, install and support the computerized electronic devices controlling client machines and systems.
Because heating, ventilation and A/C units are carefully monitored for carbon emissions, your job will entail the operation of instruments and the implementation of tests that measure system emissions. HVAC technicians must know how to review and analyze these tests measurements.
HVAC technicians are responsible for the ordering of HVAC materials from stockrooms as well as managing the materials currently being used to support their client’s systems. Technicians are also responsible for working with their vendors to schedule parts under warrantee, organize proper service replacements, and maintain regular troubleshooting procedures as needed.
Because HVAC employees’ primary job is to work with the systems that heat, cool and ventilate residential and commercial buildings, they must know how to read building blueprints. They must also be schooled in how to read wiring and pipe diagrams of both large commercial units and smaller residential homes.
Much of an HVAC technician’s job is devoted to the repairing and maintaining of the client equipment. To be able to do this, HVAC technicians must be skilled in the arts of brazing and soldering. HVAC technicians must also be skilled in the art of pipefitting and welding as much of their duties include repairing ducting. HVAC technicians must also maintain underground steam distribution systems. This too is achieved through a combination of welding, brazing and soldering. Much of this work includes repair and replacement of parts over time as the technician sees fit.
Technical work is often difficult to describe. Other times it is just vague due to a lack of available information. The latter is true of HVAC work. If you’re thinking about entering into the field of HVAC repair and maintenance, reread the job descriptions carefully, and reassess whether this field is best suited for your particular skills.
