HVAC Training Today
Today it is possible to still learn the heating and air conditioning trade through an on the job program. Many of the large companies routinely offer these training opportunities, but competition can be extremely fierce. You must have a minimum of a high school degree, or the equivalent. Most of the on the job offers will be given to people who have some previous experience as a mechanic, maintenance worker or have prior experience in electrical work.
If you do not have this type of background you can take some short courses in skilled trades at a vocational education institution or at a community college. These courses cover basic construction, electrical repairs or welding. You can even obtain certification in some of these areas by completing the classes successfully. When you armed with these additional work skills you greatly improve your chances of being hired as an HVAC trainee or helper.
There are also a great number of businesses that are looking for entry level help with formal training or apprenticeship skills. An apprenticeship can last from 3-5 years and this is a program that provides classroom activity with on the job training with experienced employees. Many people are quickly discovering that they can choose to sign up at technical colleges and take classes that teach them how to work in electronics, heating and air conditioning or other industrial trades.
There are lots of schools that offer 1-2 year programs in engineering or HVAC. At these institutions you will receive a well rounded education that teaches you the language and math skills needed to be a good employee. You will learn about system and equipment design from the ground up. These technical schools will also be giving you in-depth courses about installing, maintaining and repairing equipment.
In many states any technician that is going to be working with refrigeration or air conditioning systems must pass professional exams. These are written tests that are approved by the licensing board that governs the contractors and tradesmen. HVAC certification is a highly desired qualification, even if it is not presently required by your state or employer. When you take the steps to add a certificate to your resume it lets people know that you are a serious and dedicated professional worker.
