HVAC Training Tip of the Week: Metal Shavings
Metal shavings. They are pesky, they are messy, and when you’re working as an HVAC tech, they are unavoidable.
Ever got some metal shavings in your eyes when drilling overhead? It’s an experience you probably won’t forget: when metal shavings get in your eyes or behind your contacts, it’s painful enough that you’ll start wearing a pair of nerdy safety goggles throughout the duration of your HVAC project (which actually isn’t a bad idea…).
If you’re not in the mood to invest in a pair of state-of-the-art goggles, or don’t think they will match your tool box, try this trick touted by HVAC professionals around the world.
Metal Shavings Meet Magnet
When drilling a hole, especially one overhead, put a magnet directly to the side of the hole. Most of the shavings will stick to the magnet – the more powerful (larger) the magnet, the more shavings will stick.
To turn this trick up a notch, try putting the magnet in a plastic baggy. The shavings will stick to the magnet, but with the plastic baggy in between. When you’re done drilling, flip the baggy inside out to catch the shavings and keep your magnet immaculate. Welcome the mess-free work zone.
Flexible magnet sheets, like the kind you can buy to make magnetic signs, are also great. Tape them right below your drilling location and watch the shavings collect there, and not on the ground – or in your eyes.
It’s the little things like these that help make HVAC a little easier (and a lot cleaner). Stay tuned for more HVAC training tips as we continue our Tip of the Week series in the coming months.
