HVAC Training Tip of the Week: Dealing with Wasps
So you are out in the field one day, doing routine maintenance on an apartment’s air conditioning unit. You take off the cover and suddenly–
Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
In the surprised scramble to get away from a swarm of angry wasps/hornets/yellow jackets protecting their nest, you trip over tools and the unit’s cover, bump your head and curse yourself for forgetting to bring your wasp spray.
If running to the hardware store to grab an aerosol can of wasp death isn’t an option, you’re going to need something to get those wasps out of your work space (or face the consequences welts). Some quick, DIY wasp busters, guaranteed by HVAC professionals to work:
Banish Wasps from the Work Space (Without Wasp Spray)
- Ask a tenant for some aerosol hairspray and grab a lighter. Your very own, hand-held blow torch.
- Spray, squirt, or mist soapy water.
- Blast the area with WD-40. Some tout mixing WD-40 with flame, but you should be warned that large, fiery explosions can happen. And that is a bad thing.
- Hitting the nest and surrounding areas with a strong stream of water from a hose has been known to make those buzzing terrors flee.
- Degreaser. It degreases the life of a wasp right out of ‘em.
- Spray glue adhesive. Not only does it seal the nest shut (keeping dozy bees in), it also drops wasps as they are dive-bombing your exposed flesh.
The Non-Killing Alternative
For the HVAC tech with a conscience, there aren’t too many short-term solutions. Your best bet is to work around the nest and wear lots and lots of layers. And gloves. And a hat. And a mask. And protective eye wear. Good luck!
