HVAC Training’s Greener Five-Year Plan

The push for greener and more efficient systems of energy has been touted in a wide array of industries in the past decade.  The United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen is fast approaching and the leading countries in the world are gearing up to discuss an agreement on stabilizing spikes in global climate change; on a smaller scale, HVAC training is following suit. HVACR Business magazine reports that in the last two months, America’s leading air conditioner, furnace, and heat pump manufacturers have signed an agreement with the nation’s leading energy-efficiency advocacy groups, and both parties are hopeful that this agreement will set new federal standards for HVAC products.

The agreement, signed by more than twenty companies including the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute, The American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy, and individual manufacturers,   centers around balancing a need for uniform marketplace standards and flexibility for different regions. To do this, the agreement splits the United States into three regions – North, South, and Southwest – depending on their unique HVAC requirements, and sets market regulations on energy-efficient products for each of those places.

In addition, stipulations allowing for new homes to install even higher-efficiency heating and cooling systems are present. Many new homes can be built in a way that would not impede installation of super-efficient HVAC equipment, and the parties supporting this agreement encourage the use of the most efficient systems, particularly when they are cost effective.

What does this mean for HVAC training?

By staying vigilant of any changes in energy legislation and up-to-date on the current green trends in HVAC, an up-and-comer in HVAC training will bring relevant and contemporary perspectives to the industry. The groups involved in this agreement hope to start seeing the changes to HVAC standards take effect in 2013 and project consumer savings to be around 30 billion dollars in the seventeen subsequent years. If this proposition carries any weight, HVAC training should expect to see a significant transformation in the next five years.
