Can HVAC Training Help Fight Global Warming?

Let’s face it: heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) contributes to the current climate crisis. If you are thinking about enrolling in a HVAC training program, you probably already knew that. But did you know HVAC technicians can help save the environment?

The Rise of ENERGY STAR

Who is the real “star” of environmentalism? Hint: it isn’t Al Gore. It’s ENERGY STAR – a government-backed program that encourages the use of energy-efficient products. People have caught wind of Energy Star and are replacing their light bulbs, dehumidifiers, fans, and more with ENERGY STAR-qualified products.

ENERGY STAR also impacts the HVAC industry. An ENERGY STAR-qualified furnace is 15% more efficient than a conventional furnace, which means decreased energy use and lower energy bills. HVAC technicians can help reduce energy consumption by promoting energy-efficient equipment or showing customers how to properly maintain their current systems.

HVAC Technicians and the War on CFCs

Remember all that talk about the Ozone Layer, CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), and the ozone hole over the Antarctic? Years ago, CFCs were used in heating and cooling systems until scientists realized they were destroying the atmosphere. George H. W. Bush banned CFC production in the mid-nineties, causing an explosion in the HVAC job market.

But how is the HVAC job explosion related to the ban of CFCs? New HVAC equipment doesn’t use CFCs, but there are still dated units out there that do. HVAC technicians can reduce greenhouse emissions by making the old systems compliant with current regulations. There is an immense need for this type of training and any reputable HVAC training program should include it in the curriculum.

By now, most people realize the environment is in great danger. HVAC technicians have a unique opportunity to turn things around by promoting energy-efficient systems and upgrading old systems. What a rewarding career!
