3 Qualities You Need to Be An HVAC Pro

You’re thinking about a career in HVAC.

You may have even researched HVAC training programs in your area.

But before signing up, there is something in the back of your mind, questioning if it is the right move for you.

Having a passion for and an interest in the HVAC industry is imperative to liking your job and being successful. If you’re already there, but are still looking for that last nudge in the right direction, here are three qualities that you should have to secure your future as an HVAC pro.

3 Characteristics of a Great HVAC Tech

Endurance. HVAC work is tough on the bones, there is no doubt about it. You will be crawling on your hands and knees, lifting heavy objects, climbing stairs, and doing a lot of intricate work with your hands that will lead inevitably to a few cuts, scrapes and pinches. There is a good chance you will endure the elements from time to time – hot sun and freezing rain. On the reverse, you also will be able to enjoy the out of doors on beautiful Spring days, so it goes both ways. You should consider a job in HVAC if you… dread the idea of a desk job. You love being active and enjoy doing something physical several times a day. You don’t mind getting your hands dirty – or your clothes dirty. You think best when your entire body is moving.

Perseverance. While HVAC training programs are a background requirement for most HVAC employers, it is the amount of on-the-job experience you have that will really rocket you into the realm of expertise. Like many apprenticeship jobs, beginning HVAC technicians and installers will work with a more experienced team member to learn procedures and troubleshooting techniques. The start-out pay is typically low and long hours are required, especially in peak seasons. In general, after 5 years in the HVAC industry you will see an increase in pay and responsibilities. You should consider a job in HVAC if you… enjoy hands-on learning and one-on-one training. Were you always tinkering in the shop with your grandfather as a kid, or have you helped a parent rebuild your car?

Curiosity. HVAC is an incredibly fast paced industry, with near constant evolutions in procedures, technology and trends. Staying apprised of these changes in your own time, through research, reading and remaining in the industry’s conversation is imperative to rising shoulders above your competition. While an HVAC mentor is one of your best resources, you will need to push yourself to learn on your own as well. You should consider a job in HVAC if you… are never quite satisfied with a simple explanation. You love watching the show “How Things Work.” You supplement the things you learn with different perspectives from various sources.
